I'm homophobic and this badge thing would irritate me. But you are talking about a shopkeeper who spends each and every work day pretty much standing in one spot. As a former security guard I can tell you that gets very boring. I relished the times that I got to apprehend a shoplifter. Point being your badge thing was magnified in this homophobic shopkeeper's mind: it gave his mind something to do. So pay him back by not giving him anymore business. A business owner will notice that you don't come around anymore.
