Nostalgia makes me very uncomfortable, iin?

I feel nostalgic for certain periods of time when certain songs were out... and for some reason, I feel very nervous and uneasy. Since I won an iTunes giftcard, I went and looked up and downloaded certain songs I liked and had not heard from various years. And while I did like the songs... I cannot listen to them comfortably. I associate them with bad memories, where I remember hearing the song.

Does anyone remember the 2007 song Cyclone by Baby Bash? I loved it back then, but I feel... VERY uneasy listening it to it now, because I was arrested and also sent to a hospital for depression at the time of it's peak airplay. When I was getting driven to the hospital, this song was PLAYING...

I liked some songs from the album Pretty. Odd. by Panic! at the Disco, but I originally BOUGHT the CD the day it released in 2008 (it broke).... later the same day, I had a mental breakdown and had my longest hospital stay ever. I feel again... uneasy listening to it.

Crack a Bottle by Eminem I downloaded. I had a mix CD with it in 10th grade, in early 2009... I hated school at the time and I remember playing it on the way to school when crying, every day, loathing the upcoming school day... I feel uncomfortable again...

Meet Me Halfway by Black Eyed Peas topped the charts the same week I got with my first boyfriend. (I got with him October 30 2009.... it went on the charts the next day). So I just start reliving the happy days at the beginning of the 1 10/12 year relationship... (broke up august 9th) and how at first things were so happy, when that song was out.... :( I am in a GREAT new relationship now that is healthy and I love my new boyfriend, but still, I feel uneasy.

Am I crazy? Or is it normal? I feel seriously UNCOMFORTABLE listening to these songs, I have flashbacks I really, really don't want to have, and didn't expect to have... but am having.

Is It Normal?

  • I love that you refer to 2007 as "back then".

  • Music has a very powerful connection to memory. It is why we learn in song as children. It is rhythm and melody, patterns that information can easily attach to. Like a Hot Key for quick access to obscure files.

And the songs that you hear during emotional times will get connected or keyed to those emotions (another powerful component of memory and learning).

So yes it is completely normal to suddenly feel a surge of negative emotions or recall negative experiences when an particular song plays from that time.

If you think about it, almost EVERY song is tied to some memory of at least listening to the song the first time or at an emotional time.

So the issue is not that the song is tied to memory, but how you are relating to those memories now. If negative feelings are arising from things in the past, then this tells you you need to forgive whoever needs forgiven (even you), consider what is the positive learning you can take from the experience: "Don't do "x" again." Is often sufficient.

And find some ways to let it go. The song may still bring up the memory, but when you can recall the images without the rush of negative emotion, that is progress. And then you can enjoy the music you like, pain free.

There are numerous resources for exercises to help you do this.
