Northern ireland

What's the craic?

Have any of you heard anything on the news in your countries about the escalating tensions in northern Ireland recently?

Things are getting pretty fucked up here, the streets are crawling with scum, kids are being groomed into committing terrorist attacks and carrying out vigilante attacks on people accused of selling drugs, while selling drugs themselves.

All the people in charge of the gangs are all well known public figures. They get arrested all the time and walk free the next day.

It almost seems like they work for the police, whom they supposedly oppose. As the threat of terrorism rises, so does the policing budget.

The government spends money on fancy city centre tourist bullshit while thousands are homeless. The unemployment rate in Derry is around 8%. We have one of the highest suicide rates in the world.

People in other parts of the UK have no idea this is happening in their own country.

Sure, people aren't being blown up on a weekly basis anymore but that doesn't mean we have peace.

Is it normal?

Not NORMAL, but it's gonna get worse before it gets better. Meaning all over the world there is chaos at the top. There is something important happening on our planet right now.

Fuck yes. Being First Nation myself I can give a bunch of examples of people I know. And that would prove your point. I'm just glad that my mom rised me to work hard. :)

I heard the IRA are still fucking things up. You're completely on point about the kids. They groom them to throw shit at police when they come through, so they can't do their jobs.

Come to think of it, even I was one of those kids at one point. There was fuck all to do in our area so all we did was vandalise and light fires and throw stones at the cops without knowing why.

A few months back a bomb was found in the boot of a car in the estate where my parents live and they sent all the kids out to riot and block the bomb squad. They also use them as cover while carrying out shootings etc. These people call themselves the "New IRA" but real republicans just see them as gangsters

The ones in dublin are just typical wannabe gangsters. The ones in the north see themselves as political activists and think they're so smart

Is it normal or not?... I would say the events themselves and people's behaviour are not normal but if you think about violent and unfair human nature then its not something that didnt happen through history and that wont happen in future.

I didn't know about this. Are you sure it's really that bad? Sometimes the news makes it sound worse than it is.

Everyone in my home city of Derry knows someone personally who has been shot or told to leave the country or die. If you look at the local news for derry you might find reports of shootings but it gives no idea of how much this shit affects people's daily lives. I'm only 26 and in my life I have heard 2 bombs go off, one was at the end of my street, my younger sister witnessed a bomb exploding outside a probation office, I know countless people who have been shot or attacked by paramilitary groups. Journalist Lyra Mckee was killed in my parents' neighbourhood this year during what was described as "just another normal riot". The government doesn't give a fuck so people turn to these groups for leadership and they take advantage.

This is in a city of 100k people.

The brits tried "strong government" here already. It resulted in 3500 deaths and got no one anywhere

"got no one nowhere"? Britain held Ireland for multiple centuries and conquered a quarter of the world with a strong government...

What I meant was the troubles started in the late 60s due to the british government treating the irish in N.I as second class citizens. The good friday agreement in 1998 supposedly put an end to the conflict but the brits have gone right back to the same way again. They only look after areas where people vote for pro-british parties and the irish communities are left behind. Hopefully Brexit will lead to us leaving the UK and joining the republic but either way it's going to get real bad in the next few years.

Nah, I disagree about Northern Irelanders being treated like second class citizens; the loyalists I've met are more English than the English; I think it's just down to a massive split on independene in the country.

I think you're right about Brexit; Northern Ireland leaving the union is bound to happen, and something like Brexit will probably speed it up. I'd be staggered if the North wasn't part of the Republic in under 50 years tops.

Yeah loyalists are looked after because they vote for pro british parties.

The area I grew up in in the late 90s was more like an eastern European ghetto than the UK or Ireland. Even nowadays it's hardly changed apart from the fact that cops can drive through without being bricked every time.

Communism doesn't work, dude. You can have a strong government type that isn't communist, the two aren't mutually exclusive.

No way. The people causing all this shit call themselves socialists but they clearly only care about money and power. They put up Soviet flags in the streets
