I would disagree, and know of many open relationships that thrive for many decades (and to death) without causing issues.
The key in all of them is that a set of rules were set up that each must follow; and the rules must discuss all the possibilities that could result (STD's Children, etc.) and the other partners must be aware of the rules as well.
There are several books out there that cover what all the various issues are that have to be considered. It was note the easiest for my wife and I to review those and discuss those issues. But, it actually allowed us to learn a lot more about each other and how to care for each other; while at the same time allowing us the sexual flexibility that our relationship required due to the situation we found ourselves in.
