It is incredibly sad to watch something 800 years old, that withstood wars, revolutions, etc, destroyed in hours before our eyes. The awe inspiring hand craftsmanship will never be replaced. Part of the awe when viewing it was trying to imagine them building it with the tools and technology of their time.
Sure they can rebuild it with modern materials, but it'll be kind of like looking at a computer scan of the Mona Lisa.

Yes, but many of us live in efficient plastic houses. A new composite roof would be unimpressive. Just get used to it.
