As an American expat in Australia, I quickly learned that the American people are especially bad at two things: good manners, and personal diplomacy. The American/Chinese dominated global economic machine throws it's weight around without regard to regional cultures or tastes. American military has always been overly involved regional conflicts and international disagreements as well.
To start, my suggestion is to hold your fork in your left hand, learn to speak with the local dialect, and always present your passport face down.
