I have to read The Great Gatsby, and I can't even get to page five without forgetting most of the things I just read. I have tried almost everything I know, and to no avail.
I've tried reading it out loud, reading along with someone else, and reading things over and over until I remember (and to ultimately forget again).
I don't even feel like I can process the words I see/hear.
See the movie. Leo will put you to sleep too but they have a nice setting.

Normal to not absorb. When confronted with something boring, our brains shut down. Trying to force it to process something super boring would be like trying to force yourself to drink something disgusting and toxic, it just ain't gonna happen. Your body will reject it.
I remember we had watch or read that story. All I remember, IF this is the same story, is some abused kid growing up to be rich and having parties at his house, though he didn't even know most of the attendees. I think (scratching head)...
anyways -
If we are flat out not interested in something, the information is just not going to sink in. If we WANT to know and if we can relate somehow, that makes for interesting. Like say how a gear head wants to know how everything on a car works but most people could give two shits. Or how a geek enjoys learning programming but most of us would fall asleep.
WHY schools like to torture students with these "great classics" is still a mystery to me.
I don't understand why schools go crazy about writing reports and essays over literature. I get a quiz where you ask students some questions about the book, since it's a part of being cultured, but the rest is nonsense.
I remember studying an obscure Bulgarian poet in school. His works weren't significant prior to the year 2003, but now somehow he became a crucial part of literature...
He came from a very rich family, studied philosophy, wrote poems, had a wife and 5 children, died at the age of 83 in luxury and everything he wrote was how death is the salvation for humanity... and we should embrace death.
And the only way to achieve it was through hard labour and sorrow...
What an asshole... It's like a millionaire going up to a homeless guy and saying "it's ok to be homeless and broke, death will save you, just go hungry and suffer more"
I absolutely hated writing about that poet most people considered an asshole.
If death was salvation, why didn't that motherfucker hang himself and save future generations from his drudgery?
While I DO understand why language, reading, and grammar classes are needed, I do not know why Literature ones are. Literature is not going to help someone in the real world.
For the reading part, it should be something useful for the real world.
For "it's ok to be homeless and broke, death will save you, just go hungry and suffer more", Yeah if I were rich or not I am not) but I would not tell someone that. I firmly believe that if we laugh at or mock someone else's misfortune, we are just asking to be next.
I feel your pain, but I've learned that sometimes it's just bad timing. When I was in high school, I was under such pressure with Julius Caesar (even when it was in audio format). Now I feel I can read it with no problems :-/
Even tho the great Gatsby is considered an icon of literature, I found it quite boring, bland and forgettable.
Just watch the movie and then read a short summary of the book.
I'm assuming you gotta write an essay over it, or something. Just download a buch of essays, go through them and make your own. Or if you're very bored and lazy, just hand in the downloaded one.
I've done this trick in school for stuff I had no interest in.
I wouldn't hand in a downloaded essay, there are ways for them to check if it's been plageurised.
Not if you do minor changes, or swap around some characters for digital essays and stuff. I've done this while I was in university multiple times.
When I was in school, it was even easier, cause teachers weren't internet savvy... You could get away with a lot...
I'm guessing now it's a bit harder, but if there is a will, there is a way.
The have made several movies based on the book. Just watch one of those.
Ugh, in school reading crap I had absolutely no interest in was always hell.
Because I have to, even though my career interests have nothing to do with comprehending symbolism and the holistic qualities of stuff like wiping my ass and having my bus get delayed (or whatever retarded random thing are in this book).
You must be like 16 if you have to read this, stop being a pretentious little bitch and just guess on the quiz they give you 2 months from now. They'll give you a C and then class will move on to the next 10th grade required reading.
Man, talking about a reading assignment on this website is pretentious now? I guess it's rightfully so, seeing as every other thread is about people sniffing their own ass or debating smoking more crack.
Moreover, I got a couple pages of notes to do on it, so unfortunately, I can't just guess on the test and expect to be fine.
How do you fake likes on this site? Also, why do you automatically assume that I cheated to gain likes? Is it because you still disagree with me, even though I have absolutely nothing to gain lying to you about my workload and my perspective of the weird posts you often find here?
I see, how about I spoil it for you? A guy named jay gatsby goes to war and loses his dream girl, he comes back and said girl has found someone else. Jay is rich as a motherfucker so he throws parties tryna get her to show up at one. Not sure what happens next really but I think someone gets hit by a car and another commits suicide and I honestly can't remember if he even gets her back. And jay Gatsby's brother wipes his ass the wrong way and misses the bus also. There! I tried are you happy?
Not normal, but you can use Sparknotes or something if you're really struggling.
A little bit; I gotta read the book, take three pages of notes on it, and read parts of the bible because all these classic novels allude to it. All before August 13th with vacations and mental barriers in the way.
After you watch the movie, try reading a study guide for the book. Study guides are not as mind numbing as bad literature. Here are a couple of links:

I think you should watch both of the movies on the book as well as read the the Cliff Notes, but definitely read the book. I think the book will make more sense to you if you read the cliff notes, and watch the movies as well. If you have the Audible app you can listen to the book as well.
The more you put off doing it, and concentrate on how you don't like it, the worse it will be, and the harder it will be to read the book.
Try not a get lost in negative talk in your head, and resentment you may have about the assignment.
