No idea how to sustain a friendship

I have no idea how to sustain a friendship. When I first talk to someone, we seem to both find each other interesting- so I get to know them. I'm good at this part, I can talk to them, make them laugh, explore their personal opinions about things- and they will actively seek out time to be around me. I think that its going well when eventually after the first few months, they will start to become distant when nothing has changed. Am I starting to bore them? I try to give them space when they want it, and I allow them freedom and try not to be too suffocating. I invite them out occasionally to keep in touch, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Is there a certain novelty about being my friend that wears off after a bit? Does this happen to anyone else.

  • Are they losing interest in you or do you actually lose interest in them?
    Maybe a little of both?

Perhaps you are overthinking things, just relax & be yourself.

If people like you they will want to spend time in your company.
