My wife is racist

I dont consider myself a racist person although I've been called it for voting for Trump. But I do have black friends and like black culture. I want blacks to do good I consider them American citizens like everyone else. But my wife is kind of racist. It all seemed to start with us going to a rough black neighborhood walmart early in the morning. There was a group of 5 black guys that started spitting game at her infront in my presence. I said to them hey man thats my girl and they acted like I didnt exist and just made both of us really uncomfortable. I was out numbered so there wasnt all that much I was gonna be able to do. I wasnt armed either.

Since then my wife is always like "thats a black Walmart dont go there" or "houses are cheap but it's the black area of town" even has said "i wanna live where there isnt many black people". She isnt rude to black people shes nice to everyone but she doesnt seem to like being in the presence unless its someone she knows like my friends. I am good friends with a black family at work and their mom loves my wife we even came to their moms birthday. She carries a gun in her purse anytime shes gonna be in a black neighborhood. Sometimes she says stuff and I'm like man thats kind of fucked up. She wasnt always like this she even dated a black guy before we met. But life turned her racist.

Is she worried because of the crime statistics that come with black neighbourhoods or does she just not like black people? I don't blame her for carrying a gun tbh into likely high crime areas; I would blame her if she was a dick to black people for no reason.

Its kinda complicated but I have seen this before. I am currently in a relationship with a white woman who kinda has issues with blacks.

What I mean is she dose not like openly ghetto types. I grew up in the ghetto she knows it but I dont act ghetto.

I dont think your wife is racist she might have some racist tendencies but like my girlfriend its not that simple.

Theres nothing actually wrong with wanting to live with your race. Once you start excluding people from stuff is when problems arise. If you want to move over black people sure, you'll be playing into the banks hands but alright.

I lived in a primarily black neighborhood. It is bad. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Fucking grown ass men hanging out at parks. Back and forth gun fire all hours of the day and night.

One dude cat calling me is upsetting. FIVE?? I’d be petrified.

    I can't blame her.

I have some really cool black friends too but let's face it the stereotype exists because its at least somewhat accurate. Not for all but for some.

I'd be uncomfortable and avoidant after that too, any person/animal would respond that way to being put in a situation that made em uncomfortable.

  • Meh, it's probably the location. She's right to assume that some prominently black areas are not safe but I'd imagine it has more to do with poverty than anything else.

Given enough time she'd probably feel the same in some meth ridden hick town.

Certain neighbourhoods have sketchy people and criminals and illegal immigrants which some of them might be trouble. In those neighourhoods around here there's constantly cars getting set on fire, fights, occasionally gang murder and lots of drug business but it's certainly not just the foreigners. Last year there was many white druggies who caused all kinds of trouble. The prejudice is that its mainly black people though and it's not too odd she feels that way if she had a scary experience. I'd just stay away from sketchy neighbourhoods altogether where there's many druggies, gangs and criminals.

Don't you just love how all of these start? It's always either "I don't consider myself a racist" or "I know I'm not a racist", or "I'm not a racist but",

I had a cat who lived outside and thought mys dogs were her best friends. One day a couple stray dogs got into my yard and tried to kill her, luckily she found a tree. The dogs moved nextdoor and killed three cats/kittens. Point being my cat doesn't even trust my dogs anymore, (her two friends up until that point).
That's not nessisarily racist it's natural instinct.
By the way would you say the 5 black guys were racist or would they have done the same to a black girl and her black husband?

She’s kinda right though, sometimes as women we can’t give people the benefit of the doubt and just have to take extra precautions around them

In my country send two or more people something racist or post online and you go to jail. (or get fined or probation).

          Which country is that?

        • Oh yeah theres no hate speech laws here. She does not post online and shes nice to people. Arresting her would be for a thought crime

I think her issue is more with "hood" culture. Does she have the same anxiety when she goes to the black Whole Foods?

Unfortunately it is normal for the United States. By the way, if you voted for trump, you are a racist too. No ands, ifs, or buts about it!

She had a bad experience and she is allowed to act on that. But I think you should try and help her overcome that experience so it doesn't get worse.

Honestly, I think fearing or disliking certain races, genders, ages, or whatever else due to bad experiences is a bit of a gray area.

I know this isn't comparable, but I sometimes dont like being in the presence of mentally ill people. I had friends, family, coworkers, and other acquaintances that would do rotten things then turn around and blame the anxiety, schizophrenia, autism, PTSD, depression, or whatever other things they had going on instead of owning up to their actions. I'm pretty sure some of them self diagnosed themselves.
