You can change your mind even your relationship with god. Pretty shallow god if he expects you to live in fear and rigidity in order to honor your upbringing.
He's as unique as we all are, and I know he doesn't make too hard of terms for those who seek him. But, for the sake of your sanity, stay out of that destructive environment.
