I am a mom of five, including two young teenagers. I was brought up by strict parents who believed in spanking when necessary. I bring up my kids in the same way.

When they were younger I would spank them, pants down, with a hairbrush or wooden spoon. Now that my son is around 14, I occasionally belt him with his pants on for missing curfew.

He recently told me he is failing his courses at school and requested that I spank him on the bare with a belt or spoon. He says this will help discipline himself and do better at school.

I have done this to my daughter sometimes, but am uncomfortable doing this to my son. Is it normal for a teen son to want to be spanked by his mom, and how should I respond?

    I'd not oblige.

    A simple 1 time swat to his bottom through his cloths should be adequate to tell him that he is not behaving; although that tends to become less effective with age.

    I look for other measures 1st - and usually other methods work better. But for some an occasional simple swat does work. Frequent use or multiple swats tends to often degrade into abuse.
