Sadness isn't depression. IT's a small part of depression. Depression is a soul draining bitch of a feeling that takes away all your energy, your will to live, a lot of what was joy becomes fleeting and meaningless, and contrary to popular opinion you don't actually feel sad all the time when depressed. You mostly just feel... Empty. And tired.
The visible symptoms include a lack of desire to move in general, a lack of interest in subjects he previously found interesting, and so forth. But... ultimately, unless you are the one experiencing it, you're not going to be able to tell. So if he says he's depressed, i suggest you listen.
And the drugs do help. They won't "cure" it; you can't cure depression. The drugs just make it manageable.
