Your right, it's hypocritical because there is nothing wrong with an age gap... however legally (assuming the law says you need to be 18 where you are) you are not mentally ready to be with someone mentally older then you because they could take advantage of you, it's often called grooming. If you love this guy and feels he respects you, agree to wait until you are 18... if it's real, then it will be worth the wait. To both of you... I know it's hard because you probably feel like you know everything already about the world. Sad thing is,, parents are usually right on big deals like this... they may have learned the hard way themselves from their childhood or a scary story they have heard about someone they knew. They are just trying to protect you because they love you. Locking you up is a step too far but it's fear for your safety and wellbeing that is pushing them there. The best thing you can't do is show them you are greatful for their love and concern and that you respect them but you respect yourself too. This man could be kind and have good intentions towards you, sadly majority of them don't. If you really mean anything to him he will not mind waiting a year. And if he does mind, well, you have your answer on what he wants you for. Just try look at it from there side, like if it was your own daughter... but be confident in who you are and follow your gut always. Hopefully he won't be a bad lesson you have to learn
