75% of the population has HPV. It can contribute to reproductive cancer, but for the majority of people, it has no symptoms or complications. Awareness is important for the purposes of monitoring your health, but the stigma is unwarranted; same deal with herpes. Most people (literally 50-80% of the population) contracts oral herpes at some point in their life and out of that majority, most people never have an outbreak, or only ever have one. Genital herpes is less common, but still affects up to 25% of women and 10% of men. It's more common in women, not because women are sluttier, just because the female reproductive system is more complex and internal, and therefore more able to incubate viruses. Again, most people who test positive for genital herpes never have an outbreak and for those who do, the first one is usually the most severe and many people never have a recurrence. Herpes is a virus that hijacks our immune response and strikes when our bodies are most vulnerable. Neither virus is curable through conventional Western medicine, (I've heard of alternative cures for herpes. I'm sure there is one out there, but I don't know enough about them to comment,) but both are manageable and not nearly as bad as they sound for most people. Like most common health concerns, we tend to hear about the most extreme cases.

I actually have a great sense of humor. I just know when it's appropriate to use it.
