I rent a small place from my mom. She mentioned plans to renovate the apartment, but hadn't given me any specific dates. Well, one day I came home to discover she had gone through all my drawers and put things out on the counter without my knowledge. This includes liquor bottles, sex toys, drug paraphernalia and topical creams for rashes. She even had contractors over with all my private things in full view.

When I yelled at her, she said I was ruining our relationship. Is it normal that some people don't understand why it's important to respect someone's privacy?

    It's normal but rude of her to do. Some mother's are nosy and mother happens to be one. Your anger is justifiable and your mom clearly is in the wrong. However, she probably didn't think much of it because it didn't affect her in anyway. My experience with people doing hurtful things to me is extensive and all the people that inflicted me with anger and pain, don't think much of it because it doesn't "affect" them.

    i wouldn't get too upset about it if they weren't hidden well or at all. the fact that she wants a relationship enough to be sad you're yelling at her makes me think she's a good person. (unless there's something you aren't telling us?)

    Yes its normal both that your mom is nosey and that you hate it...make a truce to never mention it again and go from there.
