I did laugh a little reading this. Usually I'd say that you should be honest and tell the truth, but... this time, I think its too late for you to tell her the truth. And I sort of think it would be a bad idea to tell her the truth anyway.
I mean, it sounds like such a beautiful thought that your mother has. That someone could be so lucky around the holidays. She seems like the type that really believes in good luck, and miracles(can't say I don't either), but you know good luck wasn't the case this time. It seems like if you were to tell her the real story, she'd be crushed. Next time she mentions it, you and your brother should just look at each other, smirk, and look away. Let your mother keep her happy thought. Its kind of cute too.
