Unfortunately, a lot of mothers can be like that. They act like they "know everything" and "know what's best for you" without really understanding you.
I recently saw the third episode of the Netflix original series Hilda. When I saw this post, I thought it sounded a lot like the way Hilda's mother treated her in that episode. I'd encourage you to see it if you have Netflix.
Sometime within this past month, I told my parents that I wanted to go to the last BronyCon this year. I then said that, if I couldn't go there that I would at least like to go to Anthrocon, which is less than an hour away from where I live. They said yes, but I overheard my dad asking "Why can't he ever go on 'normal people' vacations? Why does he always have to go to these 'weirdo conventions'?" I remember one time when I asked my mother about Anthrocon, she asked "What if someone you know sees you there?"
My mother was like that when I was in high school as well: more concerned about my reputation than my happiness. She would never let me bring MLP merch into school with me, because she was worried that people would make fun of me. They never did when I wore an MLP t shirt or anything. I went to school at a different time and place than my parents did.
Every parent seems to want their kid to be "normal", but that isn't always the case. They need to just grow up and accept their kids for who they are.
But yeah, I would say that it is pretty "normal" for her to be like that, but that doesn't make it right.
My mom frequently calls me selfish
