The situation you've landed yourself in is curious. Your cat going to the loo in the sand is normal since most types of kitty litter are made with sand. It's like if a toilet trained dog took a shit on a newspaper. How old are you and what gender are you? I ask because this may have a lot to do with why the parents are acting this why. I'd hate to think that they're leaving because the cat is answering the call of the wild. If so they are being incredible silly as if the playground sand was pure before your cat came along.
