Yes, that's always a possibility. Though, gas usually doesn't imbed itself into clothing.

My clothes smell like farts. They must be potent to become a permanent part of my clothes
If the smell is at all reminiscent of gasoline, you could pretty confidently assume that he is a closet-Molotov-cocktail-thrower.
