Many, many years ago, I spent what was - in retrospect - the worst decade of my life in the US Navy.
I never understood why the common slang for the submarine qualification badge was "dolphins", since the badge clearly shows a pair of some sort of fish, not porpoises. Now I see that they're stylised mahi-mahi.
One of the minor mysteries of my life finally resolved...
Yeah man they're dolphins. Why they're called that is a mystery but that's what we call them. I don't know if it just a Florida thing? Calling them mahi-mahi like it's some Hawaiian fish would confuse us Florida folk. It should be obvious when were fishing, or eating dolphin what it is.
