Are they deep into that community? I would explain it to them the way you've explained it to us. Idc how open they are, but they're being hypocritical; if they're really deep into the community though you might just be fucked on this front. You can't tell a fanatic something that goes against their doctrine and expect them to be rational.
I would still tell them your feelings on this issue, but be prepared that they possibly won't accept it.
