I am trying to quit lying right now, and I haven't gathered the courage to tell anyone that I am a compulsive liar. It is an extremely difficult thing to do, so I think that if he confessed that to you is because he really appreciates and respects you.
I can see how difficult it must be for you to trust him again, but if you really want to help him, I think that you can just talk and listening to him and help him figure out what is that triggers the lying. If not, maybe seeking professional help will be the best choice.
