  • This sounds like a form of Obsessive Compulsive disorder. A lot of people are familiar with the more common manifestations, like counting or always having to have everything clean and perfect, but that's not the only way it works.

    Try to catch yourself and see if you can avoid it. You're likely not going to feel comfortable, even if you do stop yourself.

    With patience and practice, you can eventually teach yourself to override the obsessive compulsion when you want to (when you're with friends, for example), but I wouldn't recommend doing it all the time, your mind will grate at you if you do.

    By all means, talk to a mental health professional if you can. It might help to talk to someone about it, and they might have more suggestions for you.

    For the record, my little manifestation of Minor Obsessive Compulsive Disorder often wakes me from a sound sleep in the wee hours of the morning when I know that there is a DVD or a book on the shelf that isn't in alphabetical order.
