My family member is dying from cancer, why do i so feel sad?

I want to cry... just cry. I hate myself and feel regret. What is this feeling?

Is It Normal?

  • It should be obvious why you are sad.

  • Even if you don't love or even particularly like someone, watching them die is a reminder of your own mortality.

The way modern, Western society works is that we hardly ever see a dead person IRL, and those who are terminally ill or very old are usually out of sight too. This makes it very easy to avoid thinking about the reality that we will die someday. Being confronted with that can be challenging.

If you have anything positive you'd like to say to your relative, I suggest you try to find the courage to do that.

    • This... I remember how I felt when my grandpa passed away in front of me. He had a heart attack. I was only a kid and didn't know what was exactly going on, but I knew that my grandpa was gone.
I've never felt worse in my life, cause I loved him a lot.

He was a big, strong man who never backed away from anything, yet he was gone in under 2 minutes.
Life is very fragile and sacred.

I can't even imagine what I'll do when my parents time comes...

      • That's a rough thing for a kid to see.

It's the natural order for parents to die before their children, so most people have to deal with that sooner or later. In some ways, the alternative is even worse: it can be devastating for parents when a child dies.

About all any of us can do is think about this stuff now and then, and get past whatever embarrassment we might feel about telling those we love how important they are to us. One way or another, there will come a day when it's too late to say those things.

  • What you're experiencing is grief, and sadness. It's normal!

  • It is pretty normal to be sad by that I would be disheartened too if I heard distressing news like that.

  • Our loved ones aren't with us forever, things will never be perfect. Sometimes we don't get to say everything we wanted to say, sometimes we feel like we weren't there enough for them or we thought we could save everyone around us from hurt or pain. Don't be too hard on yourself. Just take each day as it comes and keep love in your heart.
