My family is so closed minded, is this normal?

Every time I get together with my family, we seem to get into debates about politics and religion where I'm the only one with a different viewpoint from the rest. I try to keep open and listen to what they have to say, but I don't feel they return the favor. Every time I give my opinion (nicely) they rebuttal it forcefully without even giving a second thought about it. It really saddens me and makes me not want to be around them because they are so closed off. I feel like they think I'm uneducated, but to be honest... I feel pretty competent (I'm the only one in the whole family about to attain a bachelors degree). I think it's disrespectful that they all gang up on me. Is this normal? Do other families behave this way?

    Unfortunately it sounds normal to me.. Just consider yourself a 'diamond in the rough' and try your best to accept them as they are.. As hard as it may be

    Well I have sort of the same argument with my parents because I smoke weed and my dads an alchoholic and I give them facts that weed does less damage to you than alchohol but they refuse to believe it they give ignorant responses like "why is it illegal then" then I give them the whole story why its illegal and tell them the BENEFITS of it. But they still believe there right they don't even give it a chance.

    Normal. Don't let this get to you so much. This is your family, so I can kinda feel where you are coming from as I'm in the same situation. You want to expand their view of knowledge and help them grow a little more. It takes some people more time then others to accept new ideas. So don't be fustrated because of their actions/comments towards your different views. Keep up the good work though! ^_~

    you are clearly well educated and it probably makes them feel insecure around you so they argue with everything you say to help themselves feel smarter. just keep coming back with more comebacks til they back down lol that's what i would do

    Haven't been in such a situation with my entire family, but that's how it is with my dad. I enjoy having discussions about many different things and there is so much I don't know, so I talk to my dad about it. It's partly because I'm bored and simply want a different view on things. However, I frequently come away with similar feelings to those you've expressed, because the conversation might get quite heated and he'll just shout me down or get in a huff. He also goes round and round in circles in his "arguments," so I get sick of trying to get through to him.

    waw...dnt know what to say...ignore them and lets them debate as much as they can,theill probably get tired of it one day.
