  • Dogs I've had have especially disliked certain noises. Generally anything you'd never hear in nature. I had a dog whose ears would droop when food was frying. Cans of drink being opened is another unpopular one, although she would get up right close to the ring pull with fake bravery and then cower when it was pulled. Anything which crinkled or crackled was also unpopular.

Dogs require a lot of responsibility in their owners. Rescue dogs especially need this. Don't think of this as a problem with the dog that needs to be fixed. Think instead of an extra responsibility for yourself in order to keep the dog happy. With patience, canine phobias can be overcome but very often the kindest thing to do is to change your own routine for the sake of the dog.

And yeah...I partially blame my parents. When my dog starts acting up like that, I'll have him sit by me on the couch and I'll comfort him as much as I can, while on the other hand my parents are like drill sergeants, always saying "KNOCK IT OFF, WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU." I've gotten on them about it before, and at least my mom's started listening. He's also become a real mama's-boy to her lately, so hopefully he'll start getting over it soon.
