My dog is behaving strangely

Hello,
For the past few days my dog is behaving very strangely: she gets startled very easily and then starts to cry as if in lot of pain.
For example if someone comes close to her she gets startled, if someone pulls on her chain even lightly she gets startled and begins to cry etc.
She looks lethargic and depressed and has lost some weight. She is eating and drinking though. She is eight years old. She is an Indian dog(Indian pariah).
What could be the matter?

    • you don't deserve thumbs down. As far as anyone knows the op probably has a flea bag that barks and shits, barks n shits. One of the neighbors probably poisoned it. I have not in my entire life met someone that is responsible enough to have dogs, NOT ONE

  • That dog is a small to medium so their life expectancy would be well over 8. Some dogs act like that when their hearing and eyesight start failing.

Maybe a neighbor or something gave it a good kinking cause it was on their property or nuisance barking?

I would put my money on an infection or stomach. If it gets worse it will refuse to eat anything. So the fact that it still eats is a good sign, because dogs will stop eating for the littlest pain

      • Is it wise to have a dog if you can't afford vet care?

My dogs are strays whom i adopted from the streets. We have an estimated population of four billion strays in our country.

          • Doesn't it take money to care for adopted dogs?

It does, but had I not adopted them they would be dead. But yes, I knew that this situation would arise one day, that I would need money to pay for the vet's bills.
The Indian stray dogs are very strong and I've needed vet's help for the first time(nine years have passed since I took them in).

I have like 20 cats, 10 raccoons, 5 dogs, squirtels, and opossums that I feed haha. I take the cats to the vet sometimes. Theyre all feral.

    • Could they of gotten into anything and ate it like rat poisoning or something? And whoever already mentioned the dogs ears or eye sight giving out makes total sense for the jumpiness. Possibly because of the age maybe the hips are starting to hurt?

My dogs 14 rn and as she’s gotten older she’s needed joint meds because she sometimes would cry after using them but has improved a ton. She’s also turned pretty jumpy but ik that’s cause she’s got glaucoma. The anxiety she gained too was pretty bad for a while where she’d constantly hawl which was unlike her (still does but takes anxiety pills) It’s like she changed a lot but really was just age getting to her. Sometimes petting her she’d act in pain on times she’d run around a lot she still thinks she’s a puppy in her mind. Idk much on those breeds like life expectancy but it could be something simple like old age catching up. Only other thing I can think of is if someone hurt it they would act this way likely.

Idk if that helps but they’re also very cute, second one’s looks remind me of my dog. Oh and how are their ears? Where I work we use rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball to clean the inside of the ears to prevent infection. I don’t have experience with ear infections but assume they’d act jumpy with noise and cry a lot.

Thank you for the detailed reply

The brown dog is the one who is ill.

I keep a strict watch over my dogs and to my knowledge they haven't eaten anything toxic, no rat poison here or anything.

The dog can also run to long distances without any discomfort which probably rules out joint problems etc.

There are no signs of injury of any kind on the dog. I have touched her on various places on her body ears, nose, joints, neck and I can't get her to reproduce the crying.

There is only one thing I find remotely suspicious: twenty days ago it was my sister's marriage, all of my family including myself had to attend it, we tied both of our dogs to a tree and left a paid watchman to look over the house and the dogs. Some days after that day this behavior developed in the brown dog. Is it possible for her to have developed a psychological trauma? Or is it possible that the chain caused the injury(an internal injury of sorts?)

        • A definite yes to both. Was it someone you’ve known and trusted to watch them? It could of been something the person did to the dog or yeah possibly a chain injury. My dog even gained separation anxiety when my dad wasn’t home like normal, cause he started staying elsewhere. Things going off schedule really effected her.

Even dogs can have ptsd from situations like abuse I’ve seen some heart breaking times where dogs will scream when someone is around because of what people have done to it. Just like people they can be triggered with anxiety from problems of the past. I mean not saying your watchman did anything but a possibility? Also maybe you leaving could have effected them/her. Like seriously my dog started to like piss and shit and would be a total freak when alone for even 10 minutes and was totally different from her normal self. Just because being alone was a problem now even putting my shoes on she will look at me super sad. As I’m typing this she’s under my feet doesn’t want to be alone anymore.

Chain could be the problem too. If she’s not used to the chain either then I’d totally say big possibility she probably freaked out being on it and hurt her neck somewhere. Chains do damage a lot I’ve even wanted to get my dog the chest vest leash thing for walks because a collar with a leash being tugged on the neck isn’t always good can definitely cause issues.

I’ve had one other dog in my life which was a puppy of my dog now and when he was 2 he gained this internal wound or something. I honesty suspect a neighbor. He was an amazing well behaved dog but one neighbor was a animal hater. Anyways one time while away for a few hours came back to the dog gone and I found him in the woods with an obvious bump from his stomach area. Brought him to the vets got xrays couldn’t figure it out and he later had internal bleeding. Beforehand he wouldn’t really eat or move acted in pain and it was super heartbreaking he lost weight so bad. So internal problems can be a thing. I’m not sure on exact issues a chain can cause or anything but you can probably look it up and see more possible reasons that might of caused harm. I hope she’s doing better.

I consulted a vet, he prescribed antibiotic, painkiller, and a syrup of sorts. I(and the vet) thinks she injured her neck by struggling with the chain. I tried combing the area near the neck(she has stopped grooming herself), and she let out a loud cry of pain and ran away, suggesting something wrong with the neck.

Do you use incense? Alot of those stupid wax cubes or essential oil sprays contain dig akerigisns. To the point some dogs forget who there human is. If you use that stuff find out if the ones you use is dog friendly cause it could be that
