  • It's very difficult for parents because they genuinely want the best for the children they've brought into the world and whose safety they are responsible for.

    It's also very difficult for children because there comes a point where your parent's values and ideas of what you should be, differ from what you actually want to be.

    My father didn't approve of my choices of comedy, either, and made an actual point of making sure he was around to watch it so that he could rubbish it and try to demean my choice. It wasn't pleasant but, over time, I think he had to realise that the control he had over my life because I was a child now had to start being reliquished as I had to take on the responsibility of being an adult and self-sufficient. It's probably time you had a serious chat with your father.

    What's particularly galling is that being a comedic writer is akin to being a preacher. Both use their words to make people feel better. Perhaps your father is threatened because it encroaches on this territory. Either way, if you explain the good of what you want to do, I don't see how he can reasonably object.
