From what he said about having a crush, it sounds like you all are probably pretty young still... Maybe just try and see if he would like to be friends first. That's probably the best place to start. Don't expect anything more, but just see if you guys might have some similar interests or something. Don't be too hard on yourself either. I have learned that sometimes indifference can do you some good.
I've never really been very good at impressing the ladies or 'playing the dating game' so to speak but some of my best efforts have always come from when I decided not to care so much if everything didn't go how I wanted it to. When you're honest with yourself and you don't expect TOO much, you can't really be disappointed. Maybe this is only something you can learn after gaining some experience, but hopefully something I've mentioned here could help you one day. Good luck to you.
