My cat died 4 months ago and i still cry a lot

I had him for ten years until he got throat cancer, my other cat still looks for him and became very clingy since he died, is it normal for me to still be this upset over the loss of my cat

Is It Normal?

  • I understand. You had him for ten years. The longer you own a pet the more memories you get to make with them hence the extended period of grieving. My condolences for both you and your cats.

  • You can't quantify or put a time limit on grieving. I bet you gave your cat a great life and rest assured you are not alone in your feelings. Take care. x

  • A beloved pet is always hard to get over. I had my pekenis chihuahua mix for 16 year. When he died I was devastated. I guess it's normal.

  • Totally Normal, My family’s cat of fifteen years passed away last summer. Still not over it. :(

  • Perfectly normal. Pets are amazing and loyal and love you as much as you love them, and it is really painful when you lose something you love, especially your adorable pets. I had lost pets too and waa ssad after they died, I dont feel like giving details, doing so will even make me sad after all these time. Sadly dying is a part of life, everything including us are destined for that. Just cherish the memories of the wonderful times you had with your cat, and I am sure your cat wouldn't have wanted you to be sad. It would take time but you will get over it, and just hope your cat finds peace.

  • I found this poem about losing a pet and it helped me cope with the sadness and grief I felt when my dog died in 2005. Get some tissues ready because it's a bit of a sad one, well for me it still is and will be twice as much when my current dog who is thirteen years old passes away, I wish she could live forever but she won't :(

  • Simple: get a new cat

    • I actually did some research on if I should do that but it would apparently lessen the life span of my current cat that I’ve also had for ten years

      • Why? Aren’t cats social animals and thus need a companion pet?

        • My current cat would feel replaced and then isolate himself and, I’m by no means what you would call a professional with this, I saw on many sites saying it would just rapidly decline his health because he could stop eating and doing other normal things

        • Cats are not social animals like dogs. They are way more of a solitary animal. Lions are the only feline thay are considered truly social.

  • They become your house mate, part of your life and your family, if you did not mourn that would be cold. My cat went missing years ago, but if I see a cat similar to her anywhere, a part of me still mourns and looks for her

  • Sorry for your loss. He is happy to accompany with you for such a long time.

  • Yeah, I think it's normal. For 3 years after his death, just the thought of my pet chicken would bring tears to my eyes.

I only had the chicken for a fraction of the time that you had your cat. R.I.P to the cat, and best wishes to you.

  • My cat died about a year ago but I quickly realised nothing would bring it back so I stopped feeling bad and got on with my life.

    • A Siberian, my dad is allergic to cats but Siberian’s don’t have a certain gene or whatever that makes most people allergic to cats
