Did the billionaire make his money off that company, or did he have outside investments?
dude, people dont become billionaires by paying teenage schmucks top dollar who work in the mail room....
It doesn't sit well with me personally but hey, that's capitalism for you. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a communist, but such a massive difference in earnings is a pretty serious problem with society.
however the other thing is.... we don't know how many other employees this "billionaire" has under his employ. Just because the OP thinks the guy has billions doesn't mean he doesn't already have a lot of financial responsibilities to the company - payroll, taxes, insurance.
And personally... i have nothing against an imbalance in income. If everyone earned the same paycheck for different jobs then... why would anyone try to advance? If you want more, you strive to be better and get promoted... or you look for a new job.
Sure Star Trek TNG wants us to think that people will just advance for the fun of it without an increase in pay... but that's fantasy. The reality is ... if people don't have to work as hard to get the same pay... they won't.

still doesn't change my opinion though. that "billionaire" might not have as much money as the OP's friend thinks he has. Plus that other worker is probably doing a different job and/or has worked there longer.
Plus that "wealthy" person might be wealthy from personal financial responsibility... i.e. careful investing, planning out a proper budget etc. Or he might have just won a lottery.
Just because the OP & his friend think the guy is "rich" doesn't mean his friend deserves any of it.
For example... one of my Navy friends was in engineering. Most of his coworker and even his supervisors wasted their pay on boozing it up. My friend however preferred to spend his time & money working on his house and building up his stock portfolio.
Was it fair that he ended up with more money than they did? *Hell yes* He earned every cent he had either from working or taking care of what he had in the first place.

He can always job hunt if he thinks he deserves more of his boss's net worth for his work.
and yes as others have said, just because your friend *thinks* he works 1000X harder doesn't mean he actually does. A lot of lower-ranked people in companies think they know more than their bosses... but it doesn't actually make it true, cos ... if they knew more than everyone else around them they wouldn't be the low man on the totem pole.
how do you know he worked 1000 times harder? and u know what they say...work smarter not harder.
Depends on what he did. Was he pushing a broom or working out algorithms?
Also: As Angel said, he agreed to that pay so whether it was "right" is a non issue. It was fair ;)
most people in low pay jobs work harder than high income people that are intelligent enough to get that high income and do fcuk all, low paid people work the shitty hard jobs breaking a sweat for peanuts because thats all their qualified for sadly but those high income people have also worked hard in a diffrent way to get their pay, or they fcuk their way to the top lol :)
It depends on what exactly he did. If the work involved calling people to sale subscriptions to magazines, then $40,000 may been a reasonable amount. If he was the personal asstistant of the "billionaire," then that may be a different story.
