I think he could've used a little more tact. It was rude how he went about it. He did say this abruptly in front of other people. Whether it was a knee-jerk reaction or not, he should've controlled his impulses better and waited til you were alone. However, he's not a jerk for breaking up with you, not at all. Apparently, this was serious to him and you should be respectful of those feelings. It's better than him trying to 'change' you. For that alone, you should respect him.
