Not to the extent of yours but I've seen it happen in a more minor way and I narrowly avoided being scalded by flying water. My guess was that there was air inside the egg and heating it caused it to expand in such a way that the pressure couldn't easily be vented.
My boiled egg exploded.

As a fun sidenote, this is how most bombs work.
