Boyfriends don't exist to dole out exaggerated compliments. I wouldn't call anyone the prettiest, because even if Aprodite herself descended from the heavens and her beauty literally gave me a stroke, there'd probably be some better looking alien out there anyways.
Don't expect your boyfriend to always sugarcoat and say cheezy things like you're the prettiest in the entire world, because you arent. But that doesn't mean he doesn't love you and find you attractive.
Not trying to be rude but it's actually good that he tells you the truth of what he feels, unlike most boys out there who just say sugarcoated things to win girls. I say don't get too upset about it, it should be fine.

I'd say it's normal. My boyfriend fully admits that I'm not the prettiest in a conventional way. But he doesn't like conventional and I know I'm a 10 to him, and that's all that matters. Beauty is subjective. As long as the guy is decent, respectful, loving...all the good stuff, what more can you want? If you want to be called the most beautiful person on Earth, then it's a good chance that your soul isn't as beautiful as it otherwise might be.
