My 4-year old little brother calls me “big sister”

My 4-year old little brother calls me “big sister” instead of my name when talking about me (3rd person). Like “big sister bought me ice cream” or “big sister is mean to me” etc. (however, when talking directly to me, he calls me by my name). This doesn’t bother me at all but Ive never heard anyone their their older siblings “big brother or sister”. I was just curious if this sounds weird (considering his age)?

Sounds natural 39

Sounds a bit weird 5
Sounds okay 17

He's four. Of course it's normal.

I think kids that age start getting curious about how people are related. Example- Grampa is Mommy or Daddy's daddy. Aunt Meghan is mommy's younger sister. Etc... So maybe in his head he's establishing your connection to him. Just a guess but I wouldn't worry about it.

At least he doesn't call you Baba. My younger sister called me Baba when we were little, and I hated it.

Sounds like he loves you and looks up to you, he wouldn't call you big sister if he didn't.

    • He’s also like a puppy. He follows me everywhere I go, except the bathroom, of course. Haha.

I called my brother big brother most my life. I call him stuff like "bro" "dude" and stuff which I guess is more odd haha. I only call him "brother" "big brother" or his real name when I am being serious.

It's cute for now, but, by the time he starts school, he better be used to calling people by their real names and titles. "My sister Denise", or "My teacher, Miss Brady". If he doesn't, he'll be the laughingstock of school, and that will stick with him. Forever a baby. Get him to start referring to you by your actual name.

As long as he does not refer to himself as "we" then all is fine. One sees it a lot in cartoons as well.

My little brother called me ‘sissy’ when we were growing up. Totally normal for a four year old.

  • My nieces called their parents by their first names until the were about 6. My cousins call their father by his first and last name and they’re well beyond 6.

Sounds normal to me. My nephew used his grandad's first name for about 3 years starting when he was about 3.

It was weird at first, but became funny & rather endearing with time. He just grew out of it & started calling him grandad after a couple of years at school.

He needs to be severely disciplined until he learns the proper way to address people.
