  • being trans does not, in and of itself, make someone mentally-ill. however, lots of trans individuals end up suffering from mental illness due to trauma they suffer at the hands of people that do not understand what it means to be trans/want to "fix" or "cure" them/etc. the rate of depression and suicide is incredibly high, and depression is often comorbid with anxiety disorders (and vice-versa). also, PTSD and dissociative disorders as a result of trauma are also pretty common. not that trauma is the only reason why people develop mental illnesses. some people have a high chance of developing mental illnesses due to genetic/familial components and, for some people, it just comes completely out of the blue. mental illness doesn't discriminate: anyone holding any identity can have one, including anyone of any gender identity. although there is a higher chance of mental illness in the trans community, it's not inherently because they're trans, it's because of how they're treated, and the myriad of different ways the human brain can react to that sort of treatment. what your friends need is understanding and love and someone to support them, because the rest of the world doesn't seem to be doing that great of a job. the fact that you posted this question is already a step in the right direction - maybe i'm reading the intent wrong but, to me, it seems like you're concerned. sorry this is such a wall of text, but I REALLY hope it helps, and feel free to contact me/respond if you want any more info. best of luck, friend and, if you made it this far, godspeed to you, and thanks for reading! :)
