false, Minecraft's new launcher (1.6) can run without java given that you are playing in 1.5 or newer
Technically it's still Java, it just includes its own copy of Java so you don't need to install it normally. That's an improvement though, I admit I hadn't heard about that change.
But after looking into it, I see Minecraft now has DRM, even though it claims not to. So that's another win for Terraria.
