Three things:
1.You actually have a pretty good salary if you really live in New York.
2. I never heard of anyone turning a closet into a mini kitchen while living with their parents. Yeah people live with their parents but they actually share the space-including the kitchen.
3. Maybe it's a typo or I'm not reading it right but (4th paragraph) NY is not near Canada?
Men are turned off that I live with my parents not by choice?

OP states that they've been thinking of moving to upstate New York, and New York's north border does border Canada, so it is near Canada.
