Mechanical sympathy 2.0

Yesterday after pondering on that old S600 and after a few drinks, I decided to buy the car. And today I did. I'm arranging transport for it to Bulgaria in the next week.

Here are a few pictures:
https://ibb.co/K580dR8 (front/ side view)
https://ibb.co/BrQzD2g (rear view of the broken trunk)
https://ibb.co/7Vb8KHM (some rust)

True, she is a bit of a handful, right side looks even worse, I didn't take pictures of that... But that's a part of the carguy life.

That tired, old S-class is now mine and I plan to restore her to her formal glory and then tune her. Make her the Autobahn princess she was meant to be! I paid a mere 2000 Euros for the car. About the same as a high end gaming pc, or a very big tv... But instead of a thing I can watch stupid videos in HD on, I got a 500hp, 800Nm luxury rocketship with the potential to be something much more.

True, I will have to dyno the car, before I figure out how many of those horsepowers have escaped and how I can get them back in the stable, but those are details.

I bought that tired, old S600, whimpering for help. And I think this is as happy and proud as I've been when buying a car.
I genuinely can not wait to start work on my "new" 2005 S600. By Easter the car will be in my garage in Bulgaria and I can start figuring out the mechanical issues and dealing with the rust and damage.

Congrats on the new project car. 4

Thanks, I'm the only one happy with the purchase XD

My dad thinks I'm an idiot and is annoyed, cause "I'm turning the damn house into a car repair shop".

Girlfriend is furious, cause I dismissed a small vacation in the Philippines for Easter as "pointless, expensive nonsense" and then go and buy a tired, old, dented S-class to restore. Taking her out for dinner and drinks this evening to soothe her a bit XD

Didn't read the first one so 2.0 is overkill.

Don't they have used Mercedes in Bulgaria?

  • Ya got ripped off man! You would think in time the value of luxury cars like your Mercedes or bmw would not drop in value like other cars but they do.

Prob get it home and the timing belt has snapped (or it might be a chain in a 2005) the pistons have now bent the valves and there is no compression. Head gasket prob has holes and there is shit stink fluids were they shouldn't be. Chassis probably rusty and need plates welded on.

I just rebuilt an engine in a 2005 chrysler. That's all I'm gonna do 2 done with it. Interior is bad and most plastics on it are breaking away. but there no rust so I'm done.

You think I buy any of my cars for their resale value?! No, I buy them cause I love those specific cars. I'm a car guy. I don't want to sell any of my cars.

Nah, the junky racecar look is not my thing. I'm gonna restore her to showroom condition. I like all of my cars to look and drive perfectly. A Mercedes must project luxury, elegance and style.

But I definitely will tune her up... S600 is basically a downgraded S65, so we'll see where that goes.

Over the years, I have learned the beauty of selling a car when the Total Average Cost function hits its minimum. I hope that your automotive passion is rewarded. It might not be.

            This^

My S-class does have rust on the fenders, side skirts and a bit on the doors, but the underside is in surprisingly good condition. Only a bit of surface rust. I've decided to delay the transport a bit and see what replacement parts I can get cheap and ship along with the car to Bulgaria.

would you ever dare go with aftermarket parts?

are there even any available or does mercedes stomp the fuck outta anyone tyinta make em?

Yep. I always had a spare engine on my pile of firewood to use to swap parts. Y'alls are okay doing collector restorations in Appalachia. Up along the U.S./Canadian border, frames and shock towers rust as fast as ice melting on a hot day. There is just nothing to weld to anything else.

Hey Bean, use your brain. Sacrificial Anodes keep bridges, boats, and skyscrapers corrosion free for years. Why not use galvanic potential to your favor? You can get cold galvanizing compound spray at HomeDepot for rust trouble spots. Load up those spot welded sheet metal seems with anti corrosive oil.

Most people don't understand the chemistry. Their ignorance makes them reluctant to design experiments with a control group that isolates results of the experimental treatment. That's not a problem that would affect you and me.

Well, maybe I'm the first, maybe I'm not.
It's a continuation of my last post "Mechanical sympathy", where I drove an old S600 for work, car was hated by everyone, neglected, abused. I felt sorry and bought it. She's my second project car. It's gonna be a slow journey, cause parts ain't cheap and I can only work on my project cars on my vacations.

Too expensive my friend... If I had the money, I would gladly buy a yacht. Maybe by the time I retire I can afford one...

Gazing at the sunset as I drink Chivas 21 and look back on my life. I could learn to enjoy that... XD
