Mam wont let me get a tattoo

Basically i want a tattoo real bad... like REALLY bad!

I'm 18 and my mum has said that if i get a tattoo, she wouldn't let me live in her house, and i can't really afford my own place... my mum is quite protective of me, so im not sure if this is just an empty threat...

What should i do?

Get a tattoo and hide it 10
Get a tattoo, she's bluffing 11
Don't get a tattoo 18
Wait to get a tattoo 60
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Well, it is your body and you should be able to do what you want with it. But then, it is her house. I do think she's overreacting a bit, but still, why not compromise?

If you really do want a tattoo so badly, then surely you can wait a bit for it. If you lose interest over time, then I suppose waiting for it would have been a good idea since it means you didn't end up rushing into getting something you'd no longer be interested in. If you still desperately want it later on, then that might help convince your mam that this is something you genuinely want and that it wasn't some fickle decision. What tattoo do you want to get, by the way?:)

If you can't afford to put a roof over your head, you can't afford a tattoo.

Why don't you try asking her to compromise by having the final say in the tattoo and it's location? Ask her to discuss it with you before she jumps to these conclusions, because both the tattoo and her feelings are important to you.

My mum said the same to me.
I got my first tattoo, showed her and she was angry for about 5 seconds and then she was fine. These things usually are empty threats.

You're 18, it's your body and your life. Be sure that you want it, though! And your mum can't actually kick you out for getting a picture on your skin. Maybe she's adding her own associations to the act of getting a tattoo... and that's her problem. Also, it might be partly that she's looking out for you - e.g. thinks you won't get a job is you go an interview with a (visible) tattoo. At the end of the day, it's your choice and your mum shouldn't be throwing those kinds of threats at you. Perhaps you should even ask her what her objections are? If she's going to spout threats like that, she has to have some kind of logical argument as well.

I mean sometimes life gives you apples when you wanted new brakes for your car, if you know what I mean.

Don't put up with that shit. My dad is the most controlling person in the world, and I despise him/tried to kill him for it. After I turned 18 he'd try to be like, I'll buy you a car, but you can only drive here. I'll buy you a house, but you can't have any girls or drugs in it and then you have to stay in my city for the next 3 years. I'll pay for your tuition, but sign this document saying you won't drink or smoke any weed.

GTFO while you still can brother.

My dad said he would cut my tattoo off with a buck knife if I got one. That was six years ago. He never did. Parents bluff.

    Don't get a tattoo.

Tattoos are ugly; she's doing it for your own good.
(not to mention how shit they look when you get old)
More than half the people I know will agree with me on that.

To put it in perspective, I will NEVER date a girl with a tattoo. Many guys & girls feel the same way.
So, if nothing else, you limit the market of potential future lovers for yourself.

Do you know or have you ever asked why she is so against it? You are 18 and it is your choice but yeah it is her house so she can say whether you live there or not, but this is a ridiculous predicament to put you in because she's your mum and should love you either way and care for you no matter what, don't get me wrong she could be the most loving person in the world but to say you can't live with her if you get a tattoo is ridiculous! Have a talk with her and ask her why she is so against it, if she has a good reason then she can say don't get one but if she says oh it will be there for the rest of your life say well it's my choice! I personally would never get a tattoo without it meaning something because you could end up regretting it but it's not my choice to say what anyone else wants to get!:) hopefully she sees sense and let's you get one, good luck :)

Fuck her, get a tattoo where you can easily conceal it from her.

Gee, I don't know, free room and board or a silly tattoo that you could get later in life (if you still want one) when you are a bit more mature (you are obviously quite immature if you even had to write this post)?
Not much of a choice for a mature person.

I snuck and got my tattoo at 19. Hid for a couple of weeks before my rents found out but, when they did, they didn't really care.
