    I think a big part of why I have a hard time getting reliable answers on this subject is because of the annoyingly common connotation attached to the word "gay". If someone could please tell me why they have negative associations attached to the word I would be very appreciative (without using religious arguments). I mean really, why is it even an insult in so many people's minds?

      because its not normal. gays make up like 2% of the population, and in nature it would be considered a disorder. add thousands of years of stigma and oppression... that's why.
