I have the same problem. As much as I wanted to make the room a sacred space for me, I found myself giving up. Later on, I figured that there are certain things that we cannot change, one of that is a fixation (Sigmund Freud's Psychosexual Theory of Development). I basically understood my roommates as individuals with Anal-expulsive personality or simply, messy and careless. Although this is a negative personality one could have, it is better to understand its root cause: (you may not believe this) but, according to Freud, it is toilet-training in their formative years. So I just tend to understand them and as much as possible, ignore the things that they are doing.
