How much money would you want to sue for the death of a loved one, and do you really think the money would make up for the loss of life?

Feel free to elaborate in the comments, I'm truly curious what people think.

Nothing would ever compensate for that loss. I wouldn't sue for money. 13
Just enough to cover the income they would have contributed. 6
I would sue for millions, it would make everything okay. 4
I'd take advantage of the situation and profit off their loss. 5

Wouldn't you agree that in some situations that this is warranted?

You were a bit vague about the specifics of how the hypothetical death occured. There are cases where lawsuits are warranted and others where not.

I'm glad that the family of somebody losing their life due to the negligence or greed of another person or organization can be compensated in leiu of the potential lost income/value and lifelong companionship of the deceased.

Or should the deceased's family just live in a ditch so someone can pocket a few more bucks?

I know that the system gets abused, but this is the spirit of what you are questioning.

  • I'm not "American" so I didn't vote. Unless it was an *extremely* heinous negligence, I believe I wouldn't sue. I know I'd love a sincere apology, though.

Well it depends why they died. If they choose to do something stupid and someone wants to sue for dying on the persons property I don’t see that as necessary.

As revenge or to get publicity (so they could be held accountable for their actions in the media)

I'll be honest, if I was financially unstable, I would sue (if I knew I had a reasonable case), but it's not because I'm "profit[ing] off their loss."
