The Civil war actually started was about certain aspects of State's rights which did not involve slavery (that's a historical fact - and can be looked up).
Jefferson Davis was advised by multiple powerful southern gentleman (and major slave owners) and by Robert E Lee that one of the things he should do in order to win the war was to free the slaves, and make slavery illegal (lots of historical documentation on that).
Robert E Lee especially understood the military significance of the issue.
Jefferson Davis decided not too because some others argued against, personal feelings on the issues, that and my understanding is that he did not understand the impact of continued slavery on the outcome of the war.
The slavery issue drew a lot more of the norther states in as they saw it as more about slavery that the states rights issues. If you were from the south you mainly focused on the States Rights claims. If you from the more northern States you focused on how bad slavery was.
Had Jefferson Davis emancipated the slaves early in the Civil war; the South likely would have won and the US Federal Government would have less influence and control of the States than they do now.
Note that I'm from Wisconsin - where the basis was a fight against slavery; and researched things when I heard the States Rights argument from some people from the south. It's very clear that looking at the historical documents leading up to the the split of the union and the Civil war was indeed caused by States claiming that the Federal Government did not have the power to control certain things, which by the Constitution are then reserved to the States.
I havent heard of the push to free slaves by the confederates but I have heard that out of desperation towards the end of the war they authorized slaves to join the army and fight alongside white men with the policy of once the war is over they would be free whether the war was won or not.
Foot soldiers were more so fighting in their own mind to protect what they believed to be their soverign nation thats being raped and pillaged by northerners. Even though slavery only directly benefited a minority of people.
I believe what caused the war was the douglas vs lincoln debates where lincoln was very critical of slavery and wealthy southerners did not trust him
