Normally, I'm in favor of that way of teaching for most people, but I do not think it the best way to go about teaching someone to swim.
I feel it is extremely important for those wishing to learn to swim to have no fear of the water, as fear instills panic and panic in the water is certain death.
I've taught many to swim and I always start with showing them that no matter what is happening, if they just roll over on their back, float, relax and breath, they will be just fine. I also teach everyone that they can open their eyes underwater (pool or ocean) and see what's going on to some degree, lessening the fear factor greatly.
I think having NO fear is not necessarily a good thing.
A HEALTHY amount of fear & respect for something potentially deadly & so much more powerful than yourself can be a good thing as long as it does not affect your ability to think clearly.
I teach everyone that when using what can be dangerous tools & machinery at work.
