Its it odd to be half vegetarian?

I eat selective meats. Chicken, turkey, cow, and bison. But I only eat it if it’s cooked and I know that it's not a mystery product. (No deli meat, NO mystery hotdogs) Most places I’ve worked at or parties/ local events(college cafeteria) have the shitty cheap sandwiches or food options with low grade meat and often I opt for the vegetarian. This prompts people to think I am in which I explain I am not, making things more confusing. Should I shut up and say I am a vegetarian to make it less confusing?

Choosing to eat vegetarian meals doesn't make you vegetarian.

It's healthy to eat some vegetarian meals instead of meat every main meal.

I can go for a longtime without eating meat, but I still do actually feel better when I eat animal protein. I have been making protein shakes quite a bit lately, and I notice I feel better with the whey as apposed to the pea/vegetable protein.

I prefer white meat, I have to say. I try not to have more than two, but preferably only one red meat meal a week. I'm trying to have ovo-veg lunches.

I haven't really tried plant based protein shakes. I make mine with almond/coconut milk, a banana, a tablespoon of peanut butter (natural, peanut only), a squeeze of honey and a couple teaspoons cacao. Used to keep me going at work from 6:30 til 10ish for a snack.

If I get work with a nut allergy family, I'm fucked for quick breakfast haha.

That shake sounds pretty good! I really just love coconut milk. Sometimes I have ovaltine with half coconut milk, and half milk.

    • I do enjoy tofu but you’re right. I’m not vegetarian, and labeling myself as one to suffice the ignorant isn't helping anyone.

Tofu's ok. Lentils and beans are better. More taste.

I really like lentils. Great beef mince replacement.

I've yet to make an exclusively bean chili. I'm the only one who likes beans and lentils...but I've done half and half and it was some good shit.

I enforce one fish, one vegetarian dinner a week. I hate fish, but I'm forcing myself. Only vege meal we'll all eat is falafel pitas. They like quiche and frittata stuff. I can't handle the texture, or the dairy, so I get my lentils in there with lentil Bolognese or soup, but it does mean cooking two meals :/

Really want a lentil or chickpea burger now. Or some vege sausages. But no one else will eat those or tofu.

Been meaning to make some egg rice paper rolls...but I'm out of Moroccan seasoning. Maybe some dukkah would do?

            • Falafel (and hummus) is probably the only time I have eaten chickpeas exclusively. But damn that fried bean ball with some hummus and pita really hits the spot.

My mother makes a mean kidney bean chilli and stuffed green pepper dishes for the colder months.

You're allowed to avoid whatever food you want, you don't need to explain shit to people.

Just say "I don't like that food". Problem solved.

Seems to me a pretty simple "problem" to solve:

"What the hell is that weird-looking shit on your plate, Jim-Bob?"
"That's zucchini and tomato lasagna with cashew herb cheese with a side of crispy tofu nuggets, bro."
"Oh... You decided to turn into a vegetarian, huh?"
"Nah, I just felt like skipping my dose of bovine growth hormone, ketamine, and slaughter house faecal spray today. What you gonna get? The ground pig snouts and feet, or the mutant chicken wings seasoned with antibiotics?"

Your views on different types of meat aren't unreasonable, but peoples' food choices are fucking boring, and anyone who questions your choices is fucking nosy and deserves the most absurd response you can think of.

      I agree.
but did you know pigs feet are popular in some cultures

I did know that. My father used to eat them when I was a kid. He also enjoyed tongue, but I could never get past the look of it. (Strangely, I liked liver as a kid, which I suppose is pretty weird.)

When it comes down to it, what we like and dislike is a cultural, learned thing. If I was literally starving and the only food available was pickled trotters and tongue, I'm sure I'd eat them.

You are not a vegetarian. You are just careful about what you eat. You can just say that you don't like all meats.

An easier and more correct way of saying it would be that you don't eat processed meats

    • nikkiclaire

Not really, fish/shellfish, lamb, pork, venison, rabbit at al. are not processed, and not listed, so "selective" was the correct term to use.

Sounds like more of a health thing. Deli meats and hot dogs aren't exactly healthy. Whether intentional or not you are eating a little bit healthier by excluding those things from your diet. As for what you should identify as to make it easier just say you prefer to eat kosher. It's almost the same thing as what you describe at the very least it is closer than saying you are vegetarian.

    • I am jewish so sometimes I do say that. But I am not kosher as I love shelfish, which is a big no no

I'm curious...I know shellfish is a no-no for Jewish people but why is it a no-no for Jewish people? What makes it off limits?

Yeah, pork is not a mystery meat, but I still don't like eating it, because pigs are very intelligent animals. If I spent enough quality time with cows I just might feel less inclined to eat beef.

I've met some very nice pigs at petting zoos, and pet shops. I'm also well aware of how intelligent they are. I can learn about this stuff by reading books & magazines, watching programs on television, and looking online.

I've seen pigs sucking up chicken shit. I don't consider that intelligent.

    • No, but I’m pretty sure hotdogs are just the leftover parts (lips and assholes as my family jokes) of a pig. I also just dont like the taste of pork/ham/salami, deli or cooked.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • You just don't eat meat you think is shitty, or meats you don't like. That's very far from vegetarianism.

Maybe you could just tell people that you only like certain kinds of meat.
