I'm 20 years old and from New Jersey. Recently I've realized patterns in things I say as a result of noticing repeated spelling mistakes, like saying perform as "PROform." (I also sometimes say our like "are" but that's less consistent.) Is this a normal New Jersey thing, or have I just been saying it wrong all this time?

Intentionally mispronouncing words is lame.
If it bothers you, just practice saying the correct pronunciation. I used to speak in ebonics back in the day, but got out of that habit. XD
Google the proper pronunciation of these words, and play it out. If you don't sound the same, it's not normal. Personally, it annoys me a little bit when people don't spell or pronounce words properly, however slang at times, is pretty cool.
I appreciate your honesty. I find this rather amusing as many people from the Northeast tend to think that people from the Deep South are stupid, which is obviously not always the case. There are stupid people everywhere.
Well, now that you know about this error in pronunciation you are free to correct it of course.
I love when people say "pacific",instead of "specific." Such as "I don't know the pacific details..."
