It makes me sad
Is it normal that people don't know how to think about abstract concepts? Its all fart jokes and relationship drama. Does anyone use their brain anymore? The stupidity of this generation makes me weep for all of mankind.

I think you're hanging around the wrong people. Plus social situations really aren't the place for theological and philosophical debates. A lot of people in this generation are smart, I think it's just that you associate outgoing extraverts with stupidity.
If philosophical and theological debates aren't meant for social settings, then where? In a place where you can preach to the choir? That defeats the purpose of a debate. And it isn't just philosophy and theology I'm talking about. People refuse to think outside the box on nearly every concept presented to them. If it challenges your world view and makes you think, people shy away from the topic or talk about farts.
And I associate word choice with stupidity, not their boldness.
In a private setting among friends? I mean really if you're going to a party, like music blasting everywhere and everyone trying to get laid, you're not really going to encounter much philosophy. However, maybe at your friends house, you guys could spontaneously have a conversation on how your consciousness is always in the present and how time is an illusion. I don't know just a thought.
I highly disagree when you say people refuse to think outside the box. I think a lot of young people think about ways to approach a problem, although I'll admit that a lot of them just give up at the first sign of an obstacle, but a lot of others keep trying and trying until they either get it or realize that they should move on and go the next one. When it comes to outside the box thinking, I believe that's entirely dependent on the person that you're talking about. I personally couldn't think in different ways to approach a problem when in physics, but I tried, and honestly I still couldn't get it even if I spent an hour on a problem. Sometimes I would though. But there were kids in that class though who would always approach it in ways that I would not think of. Let me repeat that: other kids would approach the problems in ways that I would not think of. It doesn't make me stupid, it just makes the other kids better at problem solving. Some people are better thinkers than others in a classroom setting, I just didn't have all day to spend figuring out a problem, which I'm confident that if I did I probably could've figured out.
I took a bunch of AP classes in high school so I've seen the brilliant thinkers that this generation has and how hard working they can be. They wouldn't all be nerds though, they actually would party hard on weekends, but they knew how to manage their time well enough to where they would enjoy their friday nights and perhaps a bit of Saturday, but for the rest they would do their hmwk. Or vice versa, some of these people would get their hmwk done of friday to have the weekend. Just because they were smart doesn't mean that they didn't know how to party. And that's probably the side of them that you saw. A crazy party kid, when in actuality he's just trying to have fun before he goes to think about some physics problem or math equation.
I really really think that you're mindset of this generation is highly flawed and its probably due to the experiences you've seen or had with them. If something challenges your view I believe that you have the choice to either defend what you believe or not. I know that some people, who are highly religious, dislike arguing with atheists simply because it is pointless. And vice versa. The thought of walking away from a discussion isn't always because you're scared to engage with another person.
As for world choice, well I hate sesquipedalian loquaciousness. If somebody I know ever displays some sort of vociferous haughtiness with the usage of elevated diction then that makes me pugnacious. However, I choose to simply walk away when a person decides to patronize me. In short, I believe that when it comes to a person's word choice they should keep it simple unless everyone around them is just use to it or they know what the person is saying. Honestly big words are for the most part unnecessary and usually they're used to be condescending, which I really don't like.
Sorry, but I don't think you understand what I was getting at. I don't have this problem in real life. Only on the internet.
Well that's totally different. You really should've specified that it was online. I mean come on people are way more relaxed online. You can't expect people to act all smart and high class in a place that has very few restrictions. Honestly if your problem is only online then you are totally justified in believing that people are stupid. Just as long as you know that just because they act stupid online doesn't mean that they're stupid offline.
Perhaps somebody has already said it above, but I believe in order to find people who think about abstract things, you must see everyone as 'yourself'.
And when I say yourself, I mean you must see everyone as having the capability, and doing so in practice, of thinking about philosophical and theological ideas.
Relationship drama, fat jokes, keeping up with the kardshians, it's all a distraction. To distract us from the chaos that consumes us. Some of us do not bother with distractions, or simply cannot be distracted from the wonder we see. But that doesn't mean that the distracted ones do not think or feel that exact same wonder.
Do not write this generation off as being stupid, because that in itself would be a very stupid act.
Behind closed doors, they think about the universe.
I think a lot of people do but they just don't say so all that much, like everyone thinks in abstract ways at times.
I think that it's silly to think that is all people think about. I also think it's silly to be serious all of the time. PS: Comedians are some of the smartest most inquisitive thinkers alive.
Be glad. It's less competition to create startups and more dumb customers to sell your products to. xD
If you ever wish to talk about science, as long as its not physics *shudder* just hit me up! I agree I hate it when people have nothing intelligent to say, and everything is "blah blah drugs blah drama blah poop blah." I love a good intellectual conversation. Me and my friend stayed up until three O'clock one morning just talking about God(s), abortion, mental illnesses, nurture, etc. It was great.
I think you have just been hanging around the wrong people. I have been fortunate to have friends who enjoy engaging conversations, and even my dad is surprisingly knowledgeable about religions and politics.
Watch Vsauce on youtube, he is awesome. And again, if you ever would like to talk, I am floating around the IINisphere!
Thanks, I'll check it out. I think I was just being moody because I use to get good comments on stories but now so many users on this site talk about really stupid things. I have no lack of stimulating conversation in real life but the llNverse is losing its luster.
