It infuriates me when people say "it's just a game"

I sometimes get frustrated especially when I play competitive games. I enjoy gathering all the achievements and beating the game at the hardest difficulty. I can get pretty angry when things don't go my way but when someone says "it's just a game" or something beyond those lines, I LOSE MY SHIT. It's more than JUST a game to me. I put in countless hours playing these games, it's a fundamental part of my life. I'm a completionist and I take pride in completing games so it insults me when people think it's irrelevant or childish. It's probably the one thing I'm good at in life.

Is It Normal?

  • You think the Superbowl player don't put in a lot of time. It's been their life since maybe 5 or 6 years old.

Yet, somebody has to lose. Losing actually makes you a better player, you learn more, and the feeling of loss after all that work you don't want again so you work even harder next time.

You'll hear a lot of them say "it's just a game" especially the coaches they have to accept it themselves and teach the players, we'll do better next time, otherwise you end up with mental health problems and emotional issues. You are definitely not fun to be around if you can't accept, "it's just a game".

  • A game is a game if you lose you lose you just need to learn how to deal with losing.

Whenever I lose in games like Mario Kart or other games with a competitive format, I'll still have fun.

But what I suggest if you're constantly getting angry what I think is that you should definitely take a break in between those games to get rid of your anger.

    • Do you realise I can terminate playing the game and watch tubi on my mobile? That's right, big business getting rich off gamers like you who spend money on videos to stick in your entertainment system.

    • I'm tired of these video game stereotypes, why can't it be space pinball, green, or, even better, a mobile game (game on your mobile phone)? Why can't it be Chinese mahjong? And why can't it even be an internet game? Why do you do the stereotype? Contrariwise Santa Claus is here to say enjoy the New Year. :)

  • I usually only say that if the guy is already losing his shit. It doesn't mean that your achievement is irrelevant or childish, it means YOU are taking it entirely too seriously and you need to back it off.

This is coming from a guy that also spends a lot of hours playing video games. This isn't the only hobby where "it's just a ____" applies. Some people get way too agitated over minor crap and they aren't fun to talk to, play with, or be around. There's a certain amount of competitive spirit that's acceptable, and past that you're just being a toxic asshole. Calm down and try again.

  • You lost the game

  • I prefer single player or co-op games. It's pathetic to get in fights online with 12-yr-olds.

  • It's still just a game tho. You don't see speedrunners throwing a fit everytime they dont get wr. Even they get that that's just what the game is.

  • You’re a tremendous pussy if you take games seriously enough to get emotional over them.

      • There’s no such thing as a “sin” and it shouldn’t even be called “magic” to begin with mr hanburgermeister.

        • I think Christians have sins, for a Puritan it's a sin to go to the theatre, explain that. I just don't know whether any of this is true, I have a sneaking suspicion religion's not true, the Christians say they're telling the truth, a sin is a violation of divine law, just as if you violate your morals you might be committing a sin.

Magic is in the computer games, it's subtle but they depict potions and wizards. As a matter of fact it's probably the case that there's no such thing as a sin, since I'm all in for free religion with no slavery. It's all good.

            • Yes, but I suppose Christians from early noughties weren't properly or traditionally doing fucking religion, it's not religion, it's hypocrisy, it's ordinary fat people watching "Bay Watch", eating pizza, being materialistic and having deluxe surround sound and a home theatre.

It's not fucking religion, furthermore they cherry pick parts of the Bible to do what they want, they don't want what the man next door wants, they pray to God for their favourite team winning the Superbowl, and that's about it, without living a quiet life, instead they live in big towns watching Joyce Meyer, using internet (of shit like fine dining, their next flight, Facebook, etc) instead of working in the garden, or cooking meals, they're lazy, they have TV dinners and pre-packaged meals, in my dad's case, hypocrites use curse words, are unforgiving, and they buy lottery tickets.

  • There was a game that I poured hours into and the only game I was a sore loser at. What helped me is the fundamental principle that the integrity of the game was of paramount importance. You keep it and yourself untarnished and you learn that it’s about community, as well, with other players like yourself.

    Look into Boris Spassky.

  • If you put in hours a day to video games its kind of sad

    • Why? Not everyone is going to have the same hobbies. Some people think working out or watching TV or fishing or any other activity you would do otherwise is boring as hell.

      • I just think life isnt about just having fun all the time. I'm not judging ppl that play games all day but its kind of sad. Its like wasting your life away. There's no real end goal to it. You're just staring at a screen while sitting. Leads to obesity and can cause social awkwardness if done too much.

        • Ideally, if you have a hobby that's constructive and beneficial to society, you also have fun doing it... otherwise you wouldn't do it. A lot of people find their fulfillment through working a job, sure, but not everyone.

          • Some hobbies are self destructive. I liken hours a day of video games to being an addict. Its on the level of drug addiction, or porn addiction. Its not good.

            • (This turned into an essay before I knew what was happening. Sorry! That upvote bothered me a lot.)

This depends entirely on the game. If we're talking about MMOs or phone games--mindless grinding with no purpose or endpoint, basically--then I would agree. If the guy's just playing Animal Crossing or God of War or whatever, though, it's not much different from watching TV or movies.

People spend hours on video games just because, like books, they tend to take hours to finish, but I usually don't hear books referred to as self-destructive. No one's sneering at the guy spending hours scarfing down hotdogs in a football stadium because being into sports is always seen as "healthy" even if you're not a player. Video games, meanwhile, get hit with every kind of negativity.

Like Pokemon or Mario? Childish, grow up.
Like competition (CoD/R6/LoL/SC)? You're a manchild, these aren't real sports.
Like fighting games? Only acceptable if it's a Capcom or Warner Bros IP, you only play it on the weekends, and you're not very good. Fighting games are the marijuana of video games.
Like shooting games? You're a future school shooter.
Like MMOs? You're definitely the guy 1WeirdGuy was talking about.
Like virtually any other genre (adventure, action, racing, RPG, etc)? Sounds okay, but I have way more important things to do with my life. Like posting on IIN!

A little bit of a rant, but basically just saying that video games are not all equal to each other. Not trying to advertise it, but if the only reason you're avoiding it is because of stigma, it's really not what you think it is. There's a lot of people that only play one game, like Jackbox or Mario Kart, and don't consider themselves "gamers".

To reiterate, I'm not saying there aren't unhealthy games. It absolutely can easily be a self-destructive hobby, it's just that it's not dependent on the amount of hours you're spending playing. The ultimate red flag for this kind of thing involves WHY you're playing. Escapism, avoidance, addiction, gambling addiction, and coercion are all very real things that entrap people and cause further deterioration.

But there are healthy games and healthy reasons to play them, too. Relaxation, mental exercise, social gathering, and genuine curiosity are just as real as the negatives and they're not hard to differentiate. It's not a rabbit hole, you know why you're playing when you pick the game up.

      • Because working out is actually good for your health. Fishing can actually feed you and your family. It can be a practical hobby. Watching TV can give you access to the news... which can inform you of important events you probably should know about (like natural disasters in your area).

You can have hobbies without those hobbies completely absorbing all of your time. That isn't healthy. People try to lead a balanced life. One hour of gaming, followed by fifteen minute workout, then going fishing, returning home, having fish for lunch, and gaming half an hour while watching the news... Is a lot more rewarding life.

  • It's normal, but it's not your own made up beliefs, and because of this more people talk to you, they wouldn't talk to you if it was a belief you made up, it's irrational, you should think for yourself, and I think completionism is without a doubt disgusting, there's no independent thinking. Things are normal, they're fine? Yeh, if you use your mind properly, by sitting there to contemplate, think about how ugly and utterly disgusting your mind is, and use your mind to clarify your mind. I have my own form of pessimism, I call it Charlipessimism, things are far more gruesome than I want them to be, therefore the intention is to not have gruesome things in my life, and to think negative about them.

  • I don't get angry when I lose at games but I do get angry when I get an item and don't get to use it or someone like my sister steals it from me, for example if I gather all the dragoon parts in super smash bros and fail to hit someone or get killed before I can use it, or if I get a smash ball and fail to use it or my sister beats it out of me and steals it, or that one time when I got one of those extra life things and she beat it out of me and used it on herself. I hate it because it's unsatisfying to me and it's like a compulsion that if I get an item I HAVE to use it. I get very frustrated at that. But if it's losing a game, I don't care about that.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • As a dedicated support class gamer I understand getting frustrated. It's a game but the point is to win, sucks when you lose. You are usually by yourself so you can afford to be a bit more visibly outraged. Plus theres more technical bullshit. Maybe the guy was using hacks, or your team member chose DPS and not healer.

It's completely normal, just dont punch a hole in the wall

I dont normally do the sleeper team runs but the money is insane. A friend of mine worked sleeperteam over christmas which is double time and made $6000 in a week.

    • I think Mario Kart sucks, however my favourite game's space pinball, I paid for that game on my phone, even though I'm not going to express an opinion because nobody fucking listens to my opinions (that I have a right to) and nobody fucking cares or wants them. People are irrational, as a result I think you should play games, and get tied into the industry.
