Isn that my mom dilutes the soap?

Every time my mom gets dishsoap, she gets a tray, fills it up with water, puts some of the dishsoap in it and chlorine.

Do people normally do this?

Also, how does this effect how well the soap cleans if its not concentrated? Is it helping?

Yuck! Washing your hands and face with chlorine bleach?!

Where the hell did she learn to do this? From a skinflint, germ-obsessed mother?

Soap is useful for removing grease and oil, and it also helps shift dirt particles, but it's been proven that it isn't some sort of magical elixir for removing germs from skin. Water alone with systematic scrubbing will remove most germs, and that technique also leaves more of the natural oils which keep our skin lubricated and healthy.

    • Oh no not face at all, just for the dishes.

I dont exactly like her way of doing things but living in her home, cant really do much.

Shes not really one to listen to reason or understand much. Kinda stuck if you ask me.

Thanks for the sources though! Ill definitely look into other ways of doing things.

Sorry! You did say "dishsoap". My bad.

It was the "tray" that confused me. I thought you were saying she somehow put a bar of soap in a soap tray and added chlorine to it. That would be extremely weird.

If she's adding bleach to the water when she washes dishes, that sounds like she's just germ-phobic. Lots of people are, and it's not unreasonable in moderation. As for whether that dilution of the soap makes it less effective, that's pretty easy to figure out: if the dishes feel greasy after she's washed them, then she's not using enough soap.

Are you guys Hispanic? I'm just asking because I'm Hispanic and I've only seen older Hispanics do this. Except they will sometimes mix other stuff in too and sometimes create chemicals that probably aren't safe. I kind of took a page out of that book the other day when I had less laundry soap than I thought. XD

    • Oh wow, and yep! Im guessing if people have never heard of this its because they havent met a Hispanic, or been close enough to one to see this. At least, if they find one that does this.

      Well now they know.

I don't think it's normal, no. As a matter of fact I've never heard of anyone doing that, I can't even picture it in my head.

    • Huh. Well I wonder if this is a cultural thing. I saw it in a series on YouTube titled "You know youre Mexican If..." Or something along those lines.

I guess, but my aunt married a Mexican, and they didn't do that as far as I could tell, and I was living with them, my cousin, her husband and their two kids for two months after I left my abusive ex-boyfriend.

  • Someone stole the soap in the office bathroom. No one knows who did it. I guess they made a clean getaway! 😳

Tell your taco munching mom to stop doing meth.

Soap is hydrophilic and hydrophobic so cutting it with water does nothing to decrease it's effectiveness. Half attracts grease, half attracts water but its not a zero sum game.

Cutting it with chlorine, hmmmm not good.

I think it is a cultural thing. There's a lady who cleaned where I was working and she would always add water to the dishsoap and refill the bottle. I don't know why she did it.

Have you asked her why she does this? If "dishsoap" is dishwashing detergent maybe she's obsessive about germs?

    • I have, shes just said that not all the germs are gone if we just use soap. She gets pissed when it runs out and I dont try to refill it. She said her mom before her did it though, so maybe its become her habit?

      Im breaking that habit though.

  • She's a cheapass who should cut the chlorine.

        That's crazy.

And I'm a tad germaphobic myself.

Hot water and dishsoap should be enough, along with a physical clean. I sometimes uss bicarb or salt if I need some abrasion.

You could always wash the dishes yourself and do it the way you want. If she's the only one who ever does the dishes she's entitled to do it however she wants to.
